Tattoomachine coil measurements, layers and feet vs wraps

Info about tattoo machine coils and their measurements.

As you can see, we don’t use wraps as a measurement for our coils.
Why do you ask? Coils are not measured in wraps, the technical term is layers and how many turns in a layer.
Different sizes (23,24,25,… gauge), the coating and the quality of copper wire, all measure a difference in ohms per feet.
This is where it’s all about, the amount of wire in feet on your coils. NOT wraps!
As far as gauge goes, the smaller the gauge, the thicker the wire, weird but true.
So if you know this and only look at the size of a coil (like many do), you will realize that a coil with a smaller gauge wire, will have less layers then a coil that looks the same size but has a bigger gauge wire.

Now how do we measure our coils?

Let’s say that a 24 gauge wire measures 0.001 ohm/feet and you want your coil to have a resistance of 1 ohm, simply make the math and you know how many feet of wire you need on your coil. I hope this explains the misunderstanding and we can all forget the useless term ‘wraps’.

Thank you for reading and happy inking,
